Divine Liturgy Variables for 04 September (if it be not a Sunday)

Hieromartyr Babylas of Antioch and Moses the God-seer and Prophet (4 September)

Chant the Apolytikia for St Babylas and the Prophet Moses (see below, “After the Entrance”).

Then Blessed is the Kingdom… and the Divine Liturgy proceeds. After the great litany, these Antiphons:

FIRST ANTIPHON: Psalm 91    2nd Mode

Vs 1:   It is good to give thanks unto the Lord and to chant unto thy name, O most High.

Refrain:          Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.

Vs 2:   To proclaim in the morning thy mercy and thy truth by night.

Refrain:          Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.

Vs 3:   For thou hast gladdened me, O Lord, by thy deeds, and in the works of thy hands will I rejoice.

SECOND ANTIPHON: Psalm 92                  2nd Mode

Vs 1:   The Lord is King, he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength and he hath girt himself.

Refrain:          Through the intercessions of thy Saints, O Savior, save us.

Vs 2:   For he hath established the world which shall not be shaken.

Refrain:          Through the intercessions of thy Saints, O Savior, save us.

Vs 3:   Wonderful are the surgings of the sea, wonderful on high is the Lord.

Refrain:          Through the intercessions of thy Saints, O Savior, save us.

Vs 4:   Holiness becometh thy house, O Lord, unto length of days. Refrain:       Through the intercessions of thy Saints, O Savior, save us. Glory… Both now… O only begotten Son and Word of God…

THIRD ANTIPHON: Psalm 94                      2nd Mode

Vs 1:   Come, let us rejoice in the Lord, let us shout with jubilation unto God our Saviour.

Refrain:          Save us, O Son of God, who art wondrous in the saints, we who chant to thee. Alleluia.

Vs 2:   Let us come before his countenance with thanksgiving, and with psalms let us shout in jubilation unto him.

Vs 3:   For the Lord is a great God and a great King over all the earth.

APOLYTIKION OF ST. BABYLAS OF ANTIOCH             4th Mode

By choosing the Apostles’ way of life, thou hast succeeded to their throne. Inspired by God, thou didst find the way to divine contemplation through the practice of virtue. After teaching the Word of Truth without error, thou didst defend the Faith to the very shedding of thy blood, O Hieromartyr Babylas. Entreat the Lord our God to save our souls.

As we celebrate the remembrance of Thy prophet, Moses, O Lord our God, through him we beseech Thee to save our souls.

SEASONAL KONTAKION (24 August through 8 September)        4th Mode

Joachim and Anna were freed from the reporach of childlessness, and Adam and Eve from the corruption of death, O immaculate one, by thy holy Nativity, which thy people, redeemed from the guilt of offences, celebrate by crying to thee: The barren woman giveth birth to the Theotokos, the mother of our life.
